NMA Leadership Courses
As professional managers look to the year 2000 and beyond, they recognize the need to prepare for new
techniques, unforeseen management issues, and different management skills. Survival, in many ways,
requires the preparation and development of dynamic leadership skills as well. At present, there are few courses that
adequately prepare managers for the new era, one where success hinges upon leadership
at all levels, managerial and nonmanagerial. At no time in the organizational world is leadership more vitally
important than in this decade of the '90s.

Much attention is paid to the subject, but there is little agreement in the business community about
business ethics and what values, standards, and beliefs are, or should be, important.
This course addresses policies, practices, problems/conflicts, and challenges facing leaders and managers as they
make decisions that impact the lives of many people. The course provides guidelines for managers and organizations to develop appropriate ethical codes.
Topics covered: Ethical Concerns and Issues in Business; Ethics, Morality, and Law; Ethical Dilemmas;
Ethical Codes; Planning and Setting Conditions for Ethical Practices; Communicating Ethics; Practicing
Ethics in Leading; The Ethics of Procurement: The Defense Industry and the Defense Department; Maintaining the Ethical Climate.
10 - 2 Hour Sessions, 2.0 CEU
Developing people--increasing their ability to work well--is one of the most important tasks organizations must perform.
This course is designed to present ways to enhancing the organization and improving the effectiveness
of its people.
It recognizes that human resources are the key to organzation success and the talents of people are the organizations most important asset.
Topic covered: Why Organizations Need Employee Development; Managing Using Performance
Development; Setting Targets for Development; How to develop and Identify Important Job Competencies;
Developmental Delegation; Overcoming Resistance to Development; A Systematic Approach to Development and Development Planning.
10 - 2 Hour Sessions, 2.0 CEU
The main purpose of this course is to provide leaders/managers with information and experiences to
enable them to organize and lead work groups. To accomplish this end, ORGANIZING AND LEADING WORK GROUPS
discusses the issues which have brought about a need for these groups; defines the implications of different work group designs; and helps develop the leadership skills required to manage these groups. The course is designed within a general framework that includes both internal and external influences on leadership.
This is the setting in which a leader, like it or not, must operate.
Module titles: Work Groups; Group Behavior; The functions of Groups; The Individual and the Group;
The Culture of the Group; The Social Structure of the Group; Today's Work Groups; Innovative Work Groups.
8 - 2 Hour Sessions, 1.6 CEU
The two major objectives of TQM are worker-centered quality and preventive quality control. This course
provides the ingredients of the TQM system, stressing the five management initiatives which should be
undertaken: employee involvement, measurement of quality, preventive management, leadership, and partnerships. The quality of both products and services is addressed--the latter from the perspective of both inside and outside the organization.
The course also provides information on the coveted Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award. It outlines areas
that are part of the review and what the reviewers are looking for at award-winning companies.
Module titles: Getting Acquainted; Total Quality Management; What is Quality?; Measuring Quality; Organizing for Quality; Employee Involvement; Quality Techniques--Problem Solving Methods; Quality Techniques--Statistical Methods; Systematic Approach to Quality; Case Studies in Quality Management.
8 - 2 Hour Sessions, 1.6 CEU
This course addresses the changing nature of our society, the impact change has on the ways in which
we do business, and the leadership challeges and requirements for managing change effectively. The
basic concept of change management, environmental and organizational forces relative to change, various
ways of classifying chnage, and transition management are discussed. There are activities that focus on
applying a step-by-step system for change management to various cases.

Change Process; Assessing the Present and Defining the Future; Transition Management; Commitment
Strategies and Planning; Case Studies and Applications.
