The highlights of this report are:
  • Greater White-fronted Goose
  • Merlin
  • winter owls

Seen at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on January 29th was a Marsh Wren on the first section of the boardwalk. A Barred Owl was seen at Englewood MetroPark.

At Killdeer Plains on January 27th, observed were Long-eared and Short-eared Owl, Northern Shrike, 25 Northern Harrier, and a number of Rough-legged Hawk.

On January 27th, four Black Vultures were seen at Kiser Lake.

On January 26th, blue phase and white phase Snow Goose, Greater White-fronted Goose, Cackling Goose, Ring-necked Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Hooded Merganser, Canvasback, Common Goldeneye, and Northern Pintail were seen on the Great Miami River from Miamisburg to downtown Dayton.

Also seen on January 26th: a Peregrine Falcon in downtown Dayton; a Merlin at Germantown MetroPark; an Eastern Towhee plus Song, American, Tree and Fox Sparrow, and Cooper's Hawk were seen during the feeder watch at the Aullwood Audubon Center; Red-breasted Nuthatches were seen at a number of residential feeders; Pine Siskins were seen at a residential feeder; and seen from the beach of C.J. Brown Lake were more than 1000 Canada Geese, Greater White-fronted Goose, Red-breasted Merganser, Canvasback, Common Goldeneye, Black Duck, Gadwall, and Mallard. White phase Snow Goose was observed at Reid Park. Northern Pintail was observed at Englewood MetroPark north park.

Purple Finches continue to be seen at a Germantown residential feeder.
