AREA
DESCRIPTION
AND
HABITAT

Part of the Five Rivers MetroPark system, Huffman MetroPark is upstream from Huffman Dam, an earthen flood control structure on the Mad River. It includes a 30-acre lake, parkland and woodlands, and prairie remnants. Hiking trails are found throughout the park; around the lake, along the river, and through the woodland areas.
SPECIES
FOUND

Although the lake is not large compared with other reserves in the area, it still attracts a good number of waterbirds on a regular basis, including Double-crested Cormorants, herons, Canada Geese, and ducks. Sandbars in, and along the Mad River attract a number of shorebirds during migration. Resident nesting birds include many common woodland birds, and the area is sometimes excellent during spring and fall migration for transient passerines. Rare birds that have been sighted include Western Grebe, Osprey, and White-winged Scoter.
FACILITIES
and
OTHER
INFORMATION

Picnic facilities, mostly along the lake, include tables, grills at most sites, and one picnic shelter.

Restrooms and drinking water are available.

Canoes, rowboats, and sailboats are permitted on the lake (electric motors only). Boating is also available on the river.

Sledding and cross-country snow skiing can be enjoyed in the park in winter.

Fishing is also a popular pastime in both Huffman Lake and the Mad River.
