MAR 5-Wed, MAR 6-Thurs, MAR 13-Thurs, and MAR 14-Fri. at 6:30 PM - WOODCOCK WALKS AT AULLWOOD AUDUBON CENTER.
Leader: Tom Hissong (890-7360).
Wow, we've made it through another winter! It's time to start looking for spring birds and that would be the Woodcock at Aullwood with Tom. Since the evening flights are somewhat weather dependent, Tom has scheduled these walks to give everyone the maximum chance to both "beat" the weather, and to attend. Join Tom at the beautiful Aullwood Audubon Center in Englewood. Take US 40 west from I75 north of Dayton; turn south at the east end of the dam (between the Dayton International Airport and Englewood), and go 1/2 mile to the nature center on the left.
MAR 16 (Sun) 9:00 AM - SPRING VALLEY WILDLIFE AREA.
Leader: James Tarkany.
The first of several field trips to this excellent Miami Valley birding locale. Mid-March is often very good for waterfowl headed north. Meet James at the lower parking lot; go south of the town of Spring Valley on US 42 along the Little Miami River. Turn left (east) on Roxanna-New Burlington Rd.; follow to Pence Jones Rd and take it all the way to the end (past the trailer park) to the lower parking lot. Please bring your scope.
The group will adjourn to Blueberry's in Bellbrook to compose their bird lists over lunch. This walk is sponsored by Gem City Birders.
APR 5 (Sat) 8:30 AM - ENGLEWOOD METROPARK.
Leader: Jennifer Monahan (435-0707).
Some of the best birding in the Dayton area in the spring is at Englewood MetroPark, which is always an outstanding place to look for them! There will no doubt be plenty of birds to watch at this optimal time of the spring migration. Plan now to join Jennifer to search for migrant wood warblers. To get to Englewood MetroPark, take US 40 west from I75 (north of Dayton). When you reach the east end of the dam, turn right (north) and meet at the parking lot here on US 40 (between the Dayton International Airport and the city of Englewood.)
APR 6 (Sun) 8:30 AM - GERMANTOWN RESERVE.
Leaders: Jim and Annette Arnold (299-5070).
Germantown offers miles of scenic trails that lead into a deep forest of mature and old growth woodland, cedar glades, meadows and trails along the Twin Creek. This diverse habitat should prove irresistible to many early northern bound migrants. To meet Jim and Annette, from Dayton take SR 4 SW about 10 miles, then west on SR 725 through Germantown for several miles. Turn right on Boomershine Road (which is past Conservancy Road) one mile to the park entrance; follow the main park road to the Nature Center parking lot.
APR 12 (Sat) 8:00 AM - SPRING VALLEY WILDLIFE AREA.
Leader: Sue Tackett (439-3799).
Spring Valley is great almost anytime of the year but especially in the spring so join Sue for the newest spring arrivals. Possible migrants might include Yellow-throated Warbler, Black-throated Green, Black-and-white, Sora and Virginia Rails, and Osprey. Meet Sue at the lower parking lot; go south of the town of Spring Valley on US 42 along the Little Miami River. Turn left (east) on Roxanna-New Burlington Rd.; follow to Pence Jones Rd and take it all the way to the end (past the trailer park) to the lower parking lot.
APR 19 (Sat) 8:00 AM - SPRING VALLEY WILDLIFE AREA.
Leader: Charlotte Mathena (433-2167).
SVWA will be different every week and often every day this time of year; thus the more times you visit, the more you will see! So join Charlotte for the newest spring arrivals and some of the early nesters missed last week. Meet Charlotte at the lower parking lot. See Apr 12 above for directions.
APR 19 (Sat) 9:00 AM - ENGLEWOOD METROPARK.
Leader: Vince Joyce (278-7509).
Join Vince at the Patty's Road shelter house for a "short walk and long see"! Bring your scope and a sack lunch (optional). To get to Englewood MetroPark, take US 40 west from I75 (north of Dayton). When you reach the east end of the dam, turn right (north) and meet at Patty's shelter in the park. (between the Dayton International Airport and the city of Englewood.) This walk is sponsored by Gem City Birders.
APR 20 (Sun) 7:30 - AULLWOOD AUDUBON CENTER.
Leader: Tom Hissong (890-7360).
The fields and woods at Aullwood can be literally hopping with birds during the spring migration. Join Aullwood naturalist Tom Hissong on this popular field trip that is sure to generate some wonderful and sometimes surprising migrants. See Mar 5 above for directions.
APR 25/26 (Fri/Sat from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.) - DAS BIRDATHON DAY.
Coordinator: Judy Whitaker (293-1914).
Join in the annual fun! Join the 2008 DAS Birdathon! Your Yellow Warbler will have more information. A yearly successful fund raiser based on a bird count in which you try to find as many species of birds as possible during a 24 hour period. Afterwards, meet at Patty's Shelter in Englewood Metro Park at 5:30 p.m. on the 28th for some food and to discuss the fun you had!
APR 27 (Sun) 8:00 - SUGARCREEK RESERVE METROPARK.
Leader: John Shrader (436-3664).
For those of you who are not too tired from Birdathon or have not gotten enough spring migrants then join John at a great metropark that offers a large area of upland woods, fields, and riparian habitat. Sugarcreek is often full of returning nesters. From I675, south on Wilmington Pike (cross 725), continue to Conference Rd. Meet John in the parking lot on Conference Road.
MAY 3 (Sat) 8:00 AM - CARRIAGE HILL METROPARK.
Leader: Mike Coogan (438-5688).
This beautiful Metropark is a delightful place to visit north of Dayton. Carriage Hill boasts a working farm and a variety of habitats including a planted prairie, a boardwalk and small lake, and several wooded areas. Our leader, Mike Coogan, our current DAS Chapter President and Yellow Warbler editor, is the perfect person to lead this walk since Mike has been covering this park annually on the Christmas Bird Count for many years. Come join Mike as he shows you some of his favorite birding spots on this reserve. Take I75 north, east on I70 to SR 201, north to the park entrance on the right; follow the park road east to the parking lot north of the road across from the Visitor's Center.
MAY 4 (Sun) 8:00 AM - CAESAR CREEK GORGE.
Leader: Dick Balk (886-0092).
Just below the dam at the southern end of Caesar Creek Lake, Caesar Creek Gorge is one of the Ohio State Nature Preserves. It features a 180 foot deep gorge with trails leading along Caesar Creek from the base of the dam to the Little Miami River two miles away. Along the creek lies a flood plain forest and at this prime time of the year, combined with a variety of other habitats in the area including woods and fields, there should be a large number of resident and migrant species of birds present there. The gorge is an excellent place for migrant warblers, as well as Pileated Woodpecker. Wild Turkeys are also possible, since they've been reintroduced here. Although the Gorge may be familiar to you from our prior walks at Caesar Creek Lake, this year we have scheduled this spring walk at this location to see as many woodland breeding birds as possible, as well as some of the later passerine migrants. Located in Warren County, east of the town of Waynesville. Take I75 south to SR 73. East through Waynesville. After crossing US 42, go about 1 mile, then right on Clarksville Rd. Follow 2-3 miles to park road on the right. Go down the hill into the Gorge to the parking lot below the dam.
